Roman Lives

Though he was Greek, Plutarch wrote his Lives in the first century, a world dominated by the Roman Empire.

Here he considers some of the major figures who had left their stamp on the history of Rome, including generals, rulers, philosophers and politicians.

It is the companion volume to Plutarch: The Greeks, also read with clarity and style by Nicholas Farrell.

Five Children and It

A group of children go out to play one day in old gravel pits and come across a sand-fairy - Psammead. “It’s eyes were on long horns like a snail’s eyes, and it could move them in and out like telescopes; it had ears like a bat’s ears, and its tubby body was shaped like a spider’s and covered with thick, soft fur; it’s legs and arms were furry too, and it had hands and feet like a monkey’s.” The unusual sand-fairy grants the children one wish a day, each lasting until sunset. Though wishes can come true, they are not always as pleasant as they might seem, which the children soon discover.

W.B. Yeats remains one of the most popular poets of the twentieth century.

The Lake Isle of Innisfree, He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven, Down by the Salley Gardens, The Secret Rose - these are just a few of the poems that made W.B. Yeats an international figure. Born in Dublin in 1865, Yeats drew strength from the Irish tradition, as can be seen in this special audiobook which presents the most important poems in the context of his life and ambitions. His poetic urgency was fuelled by an active and varied life, as he drew his inspiration from the men and women he knew, classical sources and contemporary politics.

Diary of Samuel Pepys, The

Thursday, September 11th, 2008 by Book Guy | No Comments »

The diary of Samuel Pepys is perhaps the most well known collection of reminiscences. He maintained it, in secrecy, from 1660, the year of the Restoration, until 1669 when fear of blindness prevented his daily labours. Though it covers less than a decade, it offers a lively and detailed insight into a period and a personality – for he noted events in both     public and private life. Famous passages include descriptions of The Plague and the Great Fire of London.
