Hobbit, The

Tolkien’s famous saga, the prelude to the Lord of the Rings, has all the ingredients of fantasy and adventure: dwarves, elves, goblins and trolls, a fearsome dragon, a great wizard, a perilous quest and a dramatic climax.

At the centre is the unsuspecting hero Bilbo Baggins, a home-loving unambitious Hobbit who is suddenly thrust into the biggest, indeed the only adventure of his life.

The radio dramatisation of The Hobbit became a classic when it was first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1968 and it continues to delight today.

Run, The

Sunday, May 18th, 2008 by Book Guy | No Comments »

Will Lee, the hero of the acclaimed New York Times bestsellers Run Before the Wind and Grassroots, has finally established himself at the heart of American government as the respected Senator from his home state of Georgia.

The road to the White House, however, will be more treacherous — and deadly — than Will and his wife, Kate, an associate director in the Central Intelligence Agency, can imagine. A decent, courageous, and principled man, Will soon learns he has more than one opponent with whom he must contend. Thrust into the national spotlight as never before, he becomes the target of clandestine forces from the past who will use all their money and influence to stop him — dead — in his tracks. Now Will isn’t just running for president … he’s running for his life.

Filled with all the suspense and roller-coaster plot twists that have become Stuart Woods’s trademark, The Run is this master storyteller at his best.

Curious Adventures of Jimmy McGee, The

Saturday, April 26th, 2008 by Book Guy | No Comments »

When Jimmy McGee finds this description of himself in Amy’s notebook, he cannot fathom why he is called a hero. He thinks of himself as nothing more than a plumber, even if he does do his job very quickly, thanks to a certain magic he possesses called the zoomie-zoomies.

But Jimmy’s life of turning on water and fixing dripping faucets is disrupted when he rescues Amy’s doll Little Lydia from a monstrous wave that sweeps her off the beach.

Jimmy keeps Little Lydia safe right on top of his magic box, where he stores bolts of thunder and lightning. But this turns Little Lydia into an electrified, out of control, bebop doll with the zoomie-zoomies! Can Jimmy find a way to restore Little Lydia to her original state as a "do-nothing doll" before he returns her to her rightful owner?
