A Public Figure, A Private Man.

Read by President Bush, with Barbara Bush, Dorothy Bush Koch, Marvin Bush, Neil Bush, George P. Bush and Jonathan Bush

Though reticent in public, George Bush has openly shared his private thoughts in his correspondence throughout his life. Organized chronologically, the volume begins with eighteen-year-old George’s letters to his parents during World War II when, at the time he was commissioned, he was the youngest pilot in the Navy. Listeners will gain insights into Bush’s career highlights - the oil business, his two terms in Congress, his ambassadorship to the U. N., his service as an envoy in China, his tenure with the Central Intelligence Agency, and of course, the vice presidency, the presidency, and the post-presidency.

A devoted husband, father, and American, his missives include: a love letter to Barbara; a letter to his mother about missing his daughter Robin after her death from leukemia; a letter to his children two weeks before Nixon’s resignation; and one written to them just before the beginning of Desert Storm. His writings are remarkable for their candor, humor, and poignancy.

All the Best, George Bush provides a surprisingly intimate and insightful portrayal of the forty-first president of the United States.

3 Skeleton Key
“Picture this Place” …

With those words, one of broadcast’s scariest tales began, and for thirty minutes, listeners in radio’s “golden age” sat transfixed and horrified — an experience audio theatre audiences of today can share with the past. Ahhhh but modern recording technology now allows for even greater horror …

The One Act Players present a new THREE SKELETON KEY - full digital stereo recording, with newly created sound effects, and an original score composed and performed by John Clark Stiefel. Directed by Glenn Carlson and featuring the stalwart Scot Crisp and John Parsons,

Based on the short story by George Toudouze, our story tells the tale of three lighthouse keepers stationed off the coast of French Guyana in the 1930s. Their quiet if not monotonous life tending a lonely lighthouse is shattered one night by the arrival of a multitude of ravenous, flesh-eating … RATS.

American Revolution, The: Part 1

Sunday, July 27th, 2008 by Book Guy | No Comments »

In 1776, the thirteen American colonies, refusing to pay unjust taxes, declared their independence from Britain. The resulting years of war are called the American Revolution, but many founding fathers believed the real American Revolution was not the war with Britain, but the revolution in ideas which preceded and caused the war. From 1760 to 1775, in the course of fifteen years, many Americans were transformed from loyal subjects into rebels against Britain. Together, the thirteen colonies set out to create something new under the sun, a government which derived its just authority from the consent of the governed.

To understand this unparalleled event, it is necessary to examine the character and ideas of eighteenth-century Americans. What vision caused them to rebel? How faithfully did they follow this vision?

John Bull’s Other Island

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008 by Book Guy | No Comments »

John Bull’s Other Island

When Thomas Broadbent, an Englishman, visits Ireland for the first time, he is accompanied by his friend Larry Doyle, an Irishman who is returning to his homeland after being away for many years.

Through the two men’s differing responses to the country and also the Irish people’s reactions to their two visitors, Shaw is able to explore the misunderstandings and misconceptions that have characterised relations between England and Ireland for centuries.

According to Shaw, ‘John Bull’s Other Island’ was written in 1904 at the request of W.B.Yeats ‘as a patriotic contribution to the repertory of the Irish Literary Theatre’, but when Mr Yeats read the script he rejected it, claiming that it was beyond the resources of the Abbey Theatre.

In fact, for Yeats, a play which was ‘uncongenial to the whole spirit of the neo-Gaelic movement’ must have made uncomfortable reading, and for us today, in the light of all that has happened in the intervening years, the issues raised by the play have lost none of their urgency.
