Tales of Beatrix Potter

“Nadia May’s dramatization is very good. Peter Rabbit is young and reckless, Squirrel
Nutkin as rude as can be, the cats sound dangerous, and the mice in “The Tailor of Gloucester”well,
they sound just like the most sociable mice I know.”AudioFile

This collection of eighteen of Beatrix Potter’s charming stories about Peter Rabbit, Tom Kitten, Squirrel Nutkin,
Mrs. Tittlemouse, and the others have enchanted children for over a hundred years and will surely do so well
into the future. Beatrix Potter’s tales were often connected with real places, people, or animals, so each story
also includes a brief introductory note about its history.

Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) born in Kensington Square, London, England, was raised by governesses and nurses, with little interaction with her parents. Alone in the third floor nursery, she spent her time studying and sketching the small animals that were her closest companions. Her brother Bertram was born six years later and for a time they became inseperable companions. In the summers the Potter rented a house in the Scottish highlands and here the children would spend joyous hours exploring the countryside, gathering plants, insects, rocks and fossils.

Nadia May has been nominated as an AudioFile Golden Voice five years running and is a winner of thirteen AudioFile Earphones Awards. She is the co-founder of TheatreFirst, a theater company in the San Francisco Bay Area where she currently lives.

Murder is Easy

Luke Fitzwilliam could not believe Miss Pinkerton’s wild allegation that a multiple murderer was at work in the quiet English village of Wychwood - or her speculation that the local doctor was next in line.

But within hours, Miss Pinkerton had been killed in a hit-and-run car accident. Mere coincidence? Luke was inclined to think so - until he read in The Times of the unexpected demise of Dr Humbleby…

Epic of Gilgamesh, The

Thursday, May 8th, 2008 by Book Guy | No Comments »

Epic of Gilgamesh, The
The Epic of Gilgamesh is an epic poem from Ancient Mesopotamia and is among the earliest known literary works. Scholars surmise that a series of Sumerian legends and poems about the mythological hero-king Gilgamesh, thought to be a ruler in the 3rd millennium B.C, were gathered into a longer Akkadian poem long afterward, with the most complete version extant today preserved on twelve clay tablets in the library collection of the 7th century B.C Assyrian king Ashurbanipal.

The essential story revolves around the relationship between Gilgamesh, a king who has become distracted and disheartened by his rule, and a friend, Enkidu, who is half-wild and who undertakes dangerous quests with Gilgamesh. Much of the epic focuses on Gilgamesh’s thoughts of loss following Enkidu’s death, and is often credited by historians as being one of the first literary works with high emphasis on immortality.

In this lecture, Dr. David Neiman recounts the major points in this epic poem in a manner that is both entertaining and enlightening.

About Dr. Neiman:

Dr. David Neiman (1921-2004) was the first Jewish scholar appointed to teach Religion at Boston College, one of America’s leading Catholic Universities.
